THE ROLE – ENGINEERING DIRECTOR

To accelerate and catalyse the execution of this strategy, our client is seeking a hands-on Engineering Director to lead and develop their Engineering team to a world class and meritocratic capability to meet the business’ growing needs. The role requires a leader and an action orientated implementor to define and deliver product development projects, rapidly and at the most effective total cost. The Engineering Director must be a highly effective communicator, a team leader, innovator, and an expert in New Product Development (NPD).

The role of Engineering Director represents a very exciting opportunity for an exceptional leader with strong and proven technology and NPD skills. The incumbent will take on a key leadership role in shaping the team, products, technology solutions and as a result, markets of the future.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

This role will include the following key responsibilities and accountabilities:

  • Establish, lead, develop and mentor a world class Engineering team ensuring it delivers against the growing business needs and agreed R&D roadmap, provides a positive ROI and delivers technical innovation combined with seamless execution.
  • Ensure that technological resources and knowledge assets meet the needs of a disruptive technology company in the twenty-twenties, and that the Engineering team is staffed with suitable capabilities and is driven by a culture of imagination, execution excellence, customer focus, product innovation, achievement, and pace.
  • Lead the analysis and decision process involved in deciding whether to develop new solutions in house, buy or license these in, or partner to realise the capability.
  • Coordinate the R&D roadmap for technology and products: Ensure that a clear vision and roadmap of technology and new products is established, agreed with the Board, maintained, and communicated to all stakeholders.
  • Technical direction: Ensure that the technical direction of all R&D activities is clear and communicated to all involved, ensuring that an appropriate balance of risk, innovation and respect of market deadlines is achieved. 
  • Thought Leadership:  Contribute to the business’ technology thought leadership, innovation and developing technical edge.
  • Vision for Growth:  Define, agree with the CEO and Board and communicate a vision for how technology and the Engineering team will drive the growth of the company.

PERSONAL PROFILE

  • Significant experience (20 years or greater anticipated) in senior level technical leadership roles, gained within engineering businesses where product innovation and development are key.
  • Proven experience and success in leading, inspiring, and mentoring teams of multi-disciplined engineers
  • Strong technical degree
  • Significant experience in technology aligned with goals, R&D, commercialisation, business development and strategy.
  • Ideally able to bring experience in the development of products involving some or all the following:
    • Electro-magnetic design
    • Sensor integration
    • Control/sensing algorithms
    • Mechatronics
    • Embedded software
    • AI
  • An inquisitive, quick learner: Given the pace of change in core areas of technology must be able to keep abreast of technical changes and disruptive developments. Able to rapidly research and establish understanding in key technology areas.
  • Project and Programme Management
  • Demonstrable initiative, drive and leadership in problem solving
  • A can-do attitude and determination to “get it done”
  • Experience in leading and participating in collaborative development and research projects with customers, partners and suppliers
