Plant General Manager

Our client is a global technology solutions group that has been operating for over 100 years. This well-established plant manufacturers a broad range of bespoke valves and controls used within safety critical process industries. Their manufactured products are typically engineered to order.

The Role

This position will have operational and commercial leadership for a £25m turnover and 160 employee manufacturing plant. The role will manage daily operations to achieve customer expectations and organisational goals.

The position directly manages a team of Value Streams, Materials, Operations, Engineering, Safety, Quality and Lean professionals within the Manchester plant, to develop and implement strategic plans and projects for our diverse line of products to achieve the overall Pressure Management strategic operational objectives.

Responsibilities and deliverables include:

  • Lead the overall plant operations to achieve manufacturing objectives of safety, quality, delivery cost and cash
  • (SQDCC) operating targets including the key performance indicators such as On Time Delivery to Customer request, OCOGS, Cost of Quality, Lead Time, and Environmental Health & Safety compliance
  • Support the growth of our business by fast tracking tactical operational actions that align with our strategic growth plans. Sales and Margin growth are key areas of focus
  • Assure compliance with all Quality Management System and external certification requirements
  • Utilises assets for maximum efficiency
  • Create and execute a Lean transformation strategy and aim to achieve a customer focused culture of continuous improvement
  • Drive efficiencies to support world class service levels to all Customers
  • Develop and action a core manufacturing strategy and establish supply chain alignment
  • Identify organisation and talent development needs, to drive and achieve strategic deployment objectives and devise action plans to address performance and talent gaps
  • Function as site leader. Where appropriate, work to integrate the efforts of everyone on the site, building a team that embodies our client’s values
  • Accountability for performance of self & others
  • Support the growth strategies and sales initiatives

The Candidate Profile:

  • A technical or business master’s degree in operations, engineering or an equivalent education
  • Extensive professional experience in operations, engineering, quality or material management in a multinational matrix organisation and complex reporting environment
  • Experience within manufacturing (including exposure to engineering / sales / operations and manufacturing) will be essential. Experience in warehousing and distribution would be also beneficial
  • A prerequisite for the role is to provide evidence of extensive experience in developing and implementing of Lean Enterprise including: Value Stream Mapping, 5S, Continuous Flow, Making Material Flow, Visual Management, Total Productivity Maintenance, Standard Work, Error Proofing, Layered Audit, Pull System as well as design & implement Strategy Deployment within a global manufacturing environment.
  • Experience in a continuous improvement environment / process improvement and prevention methodologies and must have good quantitative analytical, organisational and project management skills, including managing & overseeing finances, inventory of a business, development of new business proposals and Capex requests
  • Knowledge & experience in working with manufacturing based technology & systems / tools in a technically complex environment, SAP system experience is a key to support efficiency and measure KPIs
  • Strong demonstrated ability to train, communicate, present & deliver complex or technical information in a clear, concise and easy to understand manner at all levels
  • Ability to work independently and follow objectives through execution
  • Ability to deliver high quality customer solutions and exceed customer expectations at high standards
  • Ability to influence others & build productive, motivated, committed, high performance teams
  • Ability for high problem identification and problem resolution, demonstrated ability to make sound judgment and decisions
  • Strong self-awareness and ability to learn and lead at all levels of the organization
  • Multi-cultural experience in leading people through change & knowledge how organizations work (business & cultural insight)
  • Fluent in English language (written and spoken), a second language of French or Italian would be a benefit
