Our client helps businesses better manage their land-based assets by making use of the increasingly sophisticated but complex array of Earth Observation (EO) imagery and data available. They do this through their unique landscape intelligence platform aggregating large amounts of diverse data from satellites, airborne and ground instruments, applying relevant modelling and using their mapping, measuring and monitoring techniques with best-in-class technology to provide critical decision support for their customers.

The business is now implementing the next stage of their growth strategy which involves substantially increasing the number of UK subscriptions, expanding internationally and making their service more accessible to smaller businesses and individual users.

In order to facilitate substantially increased client engagement and registered users, the company is recruiting a new IT Solutions Developer to help them enhance and adapt their IT infrastructure, allowing users to access standardised data and solutions through the use of the company's web portal and mobile device applications.

Reporting to the CTO, the incoming IT Solutions Developer will be tasked with analyzing and leading the overall development of the companies IT infrastructure strategy in line with the business objectives.

Managing a small team, this individual will be expected to be hands-on while also recruiting additional internal and external resources to deliver the new IT systems strategy. The management team is targeting a 3 to 6 month timescale for the incoming IT Solutions Developer to analyse, solve and demonstrate viability for the solution so the business can implement plans to upscale the business.

Key tasks include, but are not limited to:

To lead and contribute to the development of the overall IT systems and infrastructure and lead the implementation of the strategy from an IT architecture perspective
Ensure all architecture solutions and architecturally-significant decisions are presented and signed off by management
Lead and motivate a team to successfully deliver the strategy on time and to budget
Advance the development of the web portal and establish a single point of entry site for multiple business areas and geographies
Create and implement new solutions applications, with a focus on in-house development of analytical tools to support client business applications
Size and manage the platform server capacity to support growth in data processing and user volumes, balancing cloud environment expansion and physical server procurement as appropriate
Review and ensure security and user authentication solutions are aligned to the required principles, standards and policies
Effective management and cleaning of all data
Identify new technologies to achieve development plans, which are expected to include mobile app development and Big Data management (e.g. Hadoop)
Management of internal business IT systems, delegated to a team member

Essential skills:

Degree educated
Knowledge and/or experience of web technology business
Previous line management and recruitment experience
Data analytics/mobile applications experience interacting with end users
Systems engineering experience such as requirements gathering, forming development plans, failure mode analysis, testing and verification
Experience of Agile software development methodology
Knowledge of core languages such as Java, Python and JavaScript
Understanding of Linux and Windows Server administration and web service deployment using Apache Tomcat and MS IIS
Experience of working with cloud based systems

Desired skills:

Educated to Master’s Degree level
Accredited management qualification or similar
Past experience of outsourcing selected software development activities
TOGAF accredited
Experience of working with R analytics and GIS software tools e.g. ENVI. FME, Erdas Apollo.
