The Role

The role of the Head of Operational Services will ensure that appropriate supplier relationships (contractual and otherwise) are in place to support the network and its services and that the services provided over the network are delivered according to the company’s stated service levels and policies and meet customer expectations.

The Head of Operational Services is a division head with five group managers as direct reports. Some services are provided by contract with third parties and others are provided directly by internal staff. Many of these services are to external customers but the division also provides services to internal customers.

The division works closely with many staff from other parts of the company and in particular the post-holder will need to maintain excellent working relationships with staff at all levels in product management, customer engagement and network operations.

The Person

The company has undertaken changes over the last few years; some driven by the changing environment and others from a desire to become more customer service focused. As a result they have an emerging product management function, deploying a marketing function and they need to increase their focus on value-for-money aspects of service delivery especially on uptake and revenue streams.

They are therefore looking for candidates who are able to bring experience of operating in this type of environment where the operational service provider works closely with finance, marketing, development and product management.

There are some challenges to tackle in this role therefore the appointee will make some changes in the division especially around the contract management and service management areas. Candidates will need excellent interpersonal skills and have a proven track record of managing change.

Specific Requirements

•A track record of management of teams involved in complex technical roles and contractual roles
•A track record of working with and influencing senior management to achieve organisational aims
•A track record of working in a technical service delivery environment that involves close co-operation with product management and marketing functions
•A track record of delivering excellent services and driving value through careful operation of contracts and supplier relationships
•A good appreciation of the environment in which the company operates and the issues that this brings
•A general understanding of public procurement issues and of planning and managing supplier contracts.


This senior management appointment will enjoy significant levels of autonomy as well as customer, supplier, staff, technical, project management, commercial and financial management responsibilities. The successful appointee will be expected to take a lead role, supporting the Directors and other senior managers, for the operational success and development of the organisation.
