Director, Rural Land Management

Rural Land Management

Rural Land Management issues are central to much of the company’s work. This includes the design and evaluation of agriculture-environment schemes and projects to support nature recovery, climate resilience and carbon management. The business are leaders in the conservation and enhancement of rural landscapes, ecological assessment and management, and conservation of the historic environment. The company believes there is significant potential to further grow this part of their business and to forge strong links with other parts of their work.

The Role & Opportunity

The business is looking for a highly experienced Director level consultant to come in and head up the Rural Land Division and work that they do. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading the company’s growing portfolio of rural land management projects. The person will work with other teams to further develop multi-disciplinary, strategic responses to rural land use and environmental issues. The Director will be responsible for leading bids and building partnerships with other specialists in the field. Projects could include:

  • DEFRA / Natural England / NatureScot research projects
  • Carbon sequestration and storage strategies
  • Environmental land management advice and monitoring
  • Natural capital and ecosystems service assessments / strategies
  • Management Plans and Whole Estate Plans
  • Woodland expansion strategies

This is a senior fee-earning, project director role. It is likely that the right person would be appointed at Associate Director or Director level. Alongside project work, this senior manager will fulfil a key role in developing new business and leading and growing their team. They will participate in the management of the Landscape Planning and Management team and the local office, as well as contributing to the strategic direction of the company as a whole. The Director will build on the consultancy’s track record to expand natural capital and climate mitigation work, particularly at the local or estate levels

Suitable Expertise

  • Suitable candidates will be able to provide advice on agriculture, land management and interfaces with ecology, landscape and the historic environment
  • The person will have a strong understanding of social and economic aspects of rural land management
  • They will also have an excellent understanding of environmental legislation, policy and practice across the UK
  • It is likely that suitable candidates will be experienced in working with the likes of DEFRA, Natural England and/or NatureScot on agriculture-environmental projects
  • Strong aptitude for developing business and providing leadership in a broad sense
  • Educated to degree level in agriculture, land management or a related subject (perhaps Forestry); post-graduate qualification is desirable but not essential
